Nicola Vassell is excited to return to Art Basel Miami Beach, where the gallery will present Paradise Lost and Found in the Galleries sector. Featuring the work of more than a dozen artists, the presentation takes John Milton’s epic poem as its thematic and existential core, asking us to reflect on the balance of forces weighing upon our decisions. It asks us to consider what an earthly paradise of our making, and its antithesis, might look like.

Through an eclectic mix of figuration and abstraction, the artists on view offer metaphorical expressions of Paradise Lost and Found as a study of contrast. Their works reflect the abundant yet complex forms that life can take.

The sense of invention and possibility that unites depictions of paradise ultimately encourages us to consider its inverse: disorder and darkness, repetition and confinement. Though each direction and group of qualities exist simultaneously, we must still contemplate them and configure a careful matrix.

Exhibiting artists include Alvaro Barrington, Julia Chiang, Adebunmi Gbadebo, Alteronce Gumby, Na Kim, Che Lovelace, Abigail Lucien, Wangari Mathenge, Frida Orupabo, Ugo Rondinone, Sean Shim-Boyle, Elizabeth Schwaiger and Uman.
