Overview

Mendieta's work uges us inward, to reexamine how we relate to our surroundings and the impact of human presence on the earth.

Ana Mendieta (1948 - 1985) was born in Havana and emigrated to the United States as a child, where she was sent to a refugee camp along with her sister. As an adult, she studied at the University of Iowa, where she recieved her BA in art and MA in painting.  Soon after, she pursued an MFA in Intermedia, a new program at the University of Iowa at the time. Her time in the program lead her to Mexico and then New York, where she completed the degree in 1978. During her studies, she developed her affinity for haunting works produced by exploring the connection between the human form and the earth. Mendieta's photographs emerge from this  examination of the rapport between the body and nature.
