Occupational travel as a railroad inspector, circus billposter, miner, horse handler and seaman, provided Yoakum with the dramatic framework for his topographical landscape drawings.
Joseph Elmer Yoakum (1891 - 1972) began his drawings in the early 1960s, recognized by their fluid gestures and colorful abstractions. At one point, Yoakum averaged one drawing per day, fueled by memories of his extensive travels. The resulting landscapes chronicled these places with sweeping terrains and serene flora, often devoid of people.
